David Harry Smith was born on September 8, 1933 in Toronto to Henry and Ada Smith. Sadly, David died June 14, 2018 in Vancouver at the age of 84. As a young teenager Dave and his family moved to Vancouver where he attended Lord Byng High School, graduating in 1951. He married his beloved Julie in July 1954 and became a Father to Stephen (1956) and Daniel (1957), and Melanie (1963). He attended UBC, graduating with a P. Eng in 1960. He began his electrical engineering career with H.A. Simons and retired from TSG group management position in 1991 and continued to work until his retirement in 1996 where established long lasting friendships with his colleagues. Over the years David enjoyed many leadership roles in various church groups and the camaraderie of his Thursday Bible study group. He was an avid hiker, runner, and gardener. He also liked to putter in his workshop building creations with wood. David was predeceased by his parents; brother, Norman; son, Stephen; and grandson, Kevin. He is survived by his wife Julie, son Dan (Gail); daughter Melanie (David); daughter-in-law, Kathleen, and grandchildren: Joanna, Nicole, Alannah, Kristen, Shanti, Michael, and Paul as well as his great grandson, Coen. Special thanks to the staff at the VGH trauma unit and ward LB8A who took such good care of David and to the many family and friends who came to visit, sing hymns, pray, and read scriptures all of which would give him peace. He will be tremendously missed but he is happily hiking and singing with the angels now. A Memorial Service will be held on July 13, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Anglican Network Church of the Good Shepherd – 189 W. 11th Vancouver. At the families request donations may be given to the VGH Foundation in the honour of the staff in the burn and trauma unit and Ward LB 8A for taking good care of David in his last days.
