Born in her family home in Notre-Dame-de-Grace NDG, Montreal, Helen was the sixth of seven children. Attending St. Augustine's School for girls and then on to secretarial school, Helen began her working life as a legal stenographer. Helen and Allen were married in 1954 living in Montreal until after the birth of son Christopher, a move west to follow Allen's shipyard career brought them to Victoria, BC. Daughter Janet was born in 1957, and every few years moving between Victoria and Vancouver found them setting up house in a new neighborhood. Oak Bay, West Vancouver, North Van, Gordon Head, finally settling near Edgemont Village where Helen commuted to the city for part-time legal work and Allen worked in nearby Burrard/Versatile Shipyards. With retirement, they moved to Beach Grove and then eventually settled on the waterfront in Parksville at Craig Bay, and enjoyed worldwide travel. After Helen's diagnosis, they moved to Gibsons, BC in 2009 to be close to their daughter, artist Jan Poynter and husband Brian McKenney.
