February 19, 1945 - April 26, 2017 Risto Kaltio died peacefully on April 26, 2017 at the age of 72 with his beloved wife by his side. Risto is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his wife Laurie of Sechelt; children Maria, Darcy (Jonathan Huck), and Tuula (Scott Sheehan); sibling Marjatta and her husband Klaus Streichert of Slocan; brother-in-law Tom Christianson of White Rock; grandson Roman Naylor; cousins in Finland; and many nieces and nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Lauri Olavi Kaltio and Irma Kaltio and siblings Esko Kaltio and Tuulikki Christianson. Risto was born on February 19, 1945 in Haukiputas, Finland to Lauri and Irma Kaltio (nee Juuruspolvi). In 1957, he immigrated to Canada with his family to Sointula, BC. After finishing high school, he attended the University of Victoria studying engineering. He married Laurie in 1969 in Victoria after they met and fell in love on a ship going to Europe. They lived in Vancouver, New Westminster and Tsawwassen before settling in Sechelt in 1987. Risto was a lifelong commercial fisherman and builder of fishing boats. He owned and operated the Cherokee, Ocean Side, Bold One, Star Pacific, Star Shadow and Arctic Fox, keeping his boats in False Creek, Steveston and Gibsons Harbour over the years. Risto will be remembered by many in the commercial fishing community as a mentor. Risto enjoyed camping trips with Laurie, sitting around a bonfire with his family and friends, having fun with his grandson and relaxing in the sun on the patio appreciating the ocean view. A memorial service for Risto will be held at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Gardens, 5941 Mason Road, West Sechelt, on Sunday, May 28 at 1:00pm. All are welcome to come and celebrate Risto's life. The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Mundy for his long time care of Risto.
