Roderick Whitby Washburn

August 28 1953 - July 31 2017 Roderick Whitby Washburn (Rod) was born in Edmonton Alberta. At the age of three he moved to West Vancouver, BC. Rod grew up by the sea in Caulfeild, West Van next to Lighthouse Park. He attended Caulfield Elementary School, Cliffside Prep School, Brentwood High School and Capilano Coĺlege. Among his early jobs were building fiberglass canoes and diving for abalone with his lifelong friend Crispin Hobbs. He settled happily into Horseshoe Bay and remained there as an entirely self-taught handyman and carpenter. Boats and the sea remained his passion. In 1997 Rod moved to Sechelt BC where he lived for the rest of his life. For almost all of that time he lived on the bay on Sechelt Indian Band land at the far end of the beach. There he continued his hands-on work and with his partner and old friend Pat Powers ran the SeaShelter, a vacation cabin. Rod also served as liaison between the bay residents, who had leases on Band land, and the Sechelt Band. He finally had to grapple with a computer. Those who knew him then will remember a humorous neighbour and friend, who was exacting in the work he did for them and for others. Above all, Rod was always a wordsmith and a storyteller. Later in life Rod relocated briefly to The Maples but returned to his beloved cabin. While there he contracted cancer and passed away at Shorncliffe Palliative Care Facility. On August 28th he would have been 64 years old. Rod is predeceased by parents Barbara Joan Washburn and Jack Washburn. He leaves behind his sister Heather Washburn, brother-in-law Curt Smecher, niece Erin Newell and nephews Alec and Graeme Smecher, as well as an assortment of grand nieces/nephew. Erin, Alec and Graeme remember their "Unky Odd" with great love as he preformed his "avuncular duties."
