Alice (Barbara) Relton Obituary

October 25, 1923 - February 23, 2021

Barbara was born to a professional family in Pinner, London where she attended a good school and progressed to a ladies sporting college. Here she excelled at almost everything, hockey, netball, swimming, etc and it was through sports that she met her dear friend Jan Watson. Barb joined the Royal Airforce during the war and was posted to the Orkney Islands where she met and in 1949 married Charlie Relton, emigrating to Toronto, Ontario in 1956. Charlie worked in the water industry and Barbara found work teaching swimming and also became a proficient and competitive ice skater. They met many good friends, Charlie build a cottage at Lake Simcoe and they were very happy. Sadly, Charlie passed away in 1977. When Barb was able to retire from office work she decided to follow her friend Jan and moved to the Sunshine Coast. Barb threw herself into this new life joining the Sunshine Coast Golf Club, singing with the Sweet Adeline's which took her all over the American continent for competitions, and volunteering with Happy Cat Haven and the Davis Bay Community Association. She was an excellent seamstress and cook and devoted many volunteer hours sewing and mending and sharing baked goods. She invested in an RV which she drove down south to escape winters. Barbara loved cats and much of her latter years were spent helping at Happy Cat Haven, which gave her enormous pleasure.

She will always be remembered by her family and friends as a kind, vibrant and upbeat lady. Barbara and Charlie gave her nieces Jennifer and Jill the gift of a childhood holiday in Canada which they have always been extremely grateful for and latterly they were able to return the favour when Barbara visited their families in the UK, Hong Kong, and South Africa. She lived her life to the fullest!

Survived by sister-in-law Joyce Underwood, Suffolk, England, nieces Jennifer Forrest, East Sussex, England and Jilly Heyes, Cape Town, South Africa, long time friends, Vi Gibbons and Judy Wilbee, Sunshine Coast. There will be no service.

Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful caring staff at Christenson Village. They truly made a difference!
