Douglas Hughes Obituary

Born May 20, 1948, in the family home at Roberts Creek, BC, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2021 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Sechelt.

His wife of nearly 30 years, Debbie, daughter Ashley and sister Pat, were by his side.  He bravely battled cancer for the last three years.

His priority in life was caring for his wife.  They kept a beautiful home and garden while enjoying a quiet life together living on the Sunshine Coast.  He found comfort in the solitude of nature, long drives and was kind to all creatures.

Doug was easy going and made everyone feel like family. He was quick to laugh or share a silly joke.  His loving family along with his closest friends, will miss him very much.

Whether it was Roberts Creek, Sandy Hook or Gibsons, Doug always called the Sunshine Coast home.

In his early years, Doug worked in the shake-block business with his late brother-in-law.  He then drove concrete trucks for Swansons for nearly 20 years, until his retirement in 2014.

Doug enjoyed his hockey and baseball.  He played ball with the local Bad News Bears Baseball team.  During retirement he showed great creativity in crafting unique, one of a kind, wooden pieces many of which are in the homes of loved ones.  He took pride in puttering around his garden or enjoyed tinkering in his workshop using his handy skills to fix almost anything.

Thanks to neighbors, Glen and Janice Hudder for their caring support. Our family is extremely grateful for their friendship.

Doug is survived by his mother, Lee Hughes; wife, Debbie Saunders (nee Verhulst) and daughter Ashley; his sisters, Pat Boser, (Brad-deceased) and family; Sylvia Price (Steve) and family; grandchildren, Finn and Wyatt.  Doug is pre-deceased by his father, Ron Hughes.

Doug was a man among men and an excellent example for all that had the privilege to know him.

Rest in peace.

There will be no service at this time but we would appreciate donations in memory of Doug to the BC Cancer Agency.  Thank you.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
