Elise (Wadham) Buque
February 7, 1930 ~ July 8, 2023 (age 93) 93 Years Old
Elise was a beloved sister, wife, aunt and friend.
She was born in a log cabin in Alberta on February 7, 1930. Her parents, Phyllis and Eric Wadham moved the family back to England when she was still an infant.
During the Second World War, her family was repositioned to Carbis Bay in Cornwall where she became the leader of a group of nine-year-old ‘commandos’ who spent their days with adventures on the beaches and cliffs, and her love for the outdoors continued throughout her life.
After leaving school, she became a personal assistant to executives at Benn Brothers and ICL in London. In 195?, she married Rony Buque, the love of her life. The couple spent every weekend of their working life on their catamaran, El Buque, where Elise would teach culinary skills in the galley while Rony gave sailing instruction on deck.
The couple retired in the 1980,s and spent their summers in a caravan on the Solent and their winters in Estepona, Spain, close to her brother, Nicholas.
In 1996, Elise and Rony moved to Sechelt having fallen in love with the beautiful surroundings. Elise’s two sisters, Patricia and Carolyn, were already on this side of the Atlantic. Sadly, Rony died that same year.
With the loving support of her community, ever resilient, Elise moved on to get her driver’s license, and then went on to volunteer for the Coastal Recital Society and the Friends of the Library. She was an avid reader, journal-keeper, gardener and exercised regularly until close to the end. She loved inviting neighbors in for a ‘cup of tea’.
To quote Elise:
“Life on one’s own without a loved companion is never ideal. It takes an effort to carve out a new way of living, but it can be done”.
Elise passed peacefully at Sechelt Hospital on July 8th 2023 at age 93. Elise is survived by her sister Carolyn, brother Nicholas and their families as well as sister Patricia’s families. She was pre-deceased by her husband Rony, sister Patricia, and niece Jennifer.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favorite charity would be appreciated. Elise supported many charities, including the Red Cross, Alzheimer’s Society, Doctors without Borders, Sunshine Coast Hospice Society and Canadian Cancer.
