Gary Sutherland Obituary

Gary Bruce Sutherland, born July 20th, 1940, in Nelson, BC, passed away peacefully at his summer home in Halfmoon Bay, BC, on August 29th, 2021.  He was surrounded by his family for the entire summer at the place he loved most, Halfmoon Bay, and was thrilled to attend Scott and Michelle’s wedding on August 14th, where he was the life of the party, as usual.

After residing in several Western Canadian cities, the family settled in West Vancouver when Gary was in Grade 11. He graduated from West Vancouver Senior Secondary then attended UBC, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.  Gary was a long-time member of the Vancouver investment community.  He started his career as an analyst with Pemberton Securities and ended as a Vice President at RBC Private Investment Counsel. Upon retirement, he served on the Board of Pacific Insight Electronics Corp.

Community service was important to him. He served on numerous boards, including the UBC Alumni Association Board of Management and the West Vancouver Community Foundation. He served as the Director and President of the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Heart & Stroke Scientific Research Corporation of Canada. Gary also played a role in many West Vancouver Municipal Committees and devoted much of his time to West Vancouver United Church, of which he and Marilyn were long-time members.

Gary is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marilyn; children Ainsley (Jonathan Brown), Erin McClean (Jesse), and Scott (Michelle); grandchildren Adelyn, Holden and Lauchlan, and grand-dog Oliver. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Sutherland. He is survived by in-laws June Sutherland, and Paul and Susan McFadyen as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the many wonderful people who took care of Gary, including Drs. Snopkowski, Avanessian, Leitch and McFee and the amazing nurses at Lions Gate and Sechelt Hospitals.  A special thank you to Dr. Sara Wadge and Dr. Carmen Goojha and the Sechelt Home Care nurses, Kathleen and Janise, for providing compassionate end-of-life care.

A private family service will be held at West Vancouver United Church.  In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the BC Cancer Foundation.
