Born in Wakaw, Saskatchewan, on November 6, 1931, Madi later moved to Calgary before spending many memorable years living in Jakarta, Indonesia. She returned to Canada in 1994, bringing with her a lifetime of stories, strength, faith, music, and adventure.
Madeleine believed deeply in helping others, and during her years in Indonesia she generously supported many people and families in need.
Madi was truly one of a kind — often referring to herself as “the real McCoy” — and anyone who knew her understood exactly what she meant. She was spirited, resilient, witty, and impossible to forget: a true force to be reckoned with.
Music was woven throughout her life, especially jazz. If there was a piano nearby, chances were good you would find Madi sitting at it, filling the room with lively boogie-woogie tunes. Her love of music began early when, at just 15 years old, she secretly joined a jazz band called The Naughty Five without her parents’ knowledge. She would sneak out her bedroom window at night to perform, until one evening she returned home to discover the stool she used to climb back in had mysteriously disappeared — bringing her brief but memorable music career to an abrupt end.
Later in life, Madi’s faith became her foundation and source of strength as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Her devotion, perseverance, and deep beliefs guided her through life and brought her comfort and peace.
She leaves behind her loving daughters, “Peri” (Patricia) and Michele (“Midge”); her cherished grandchildren, Lora (Brett), Marlis (Chris), Santana (Chris), and Shelby (Connor); as well as eight beloved great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her younger sister, Joy, the last surviving sibling of four children.
Our family would like to sincerely thank the care aides and staff at Christiansen Village, who cared for Madi with such love, dignity, and compassion. Your kindness not only comforted her, but surrounded our family with support and care as well. We are deeply grateful.
Madi will be remembered fondly for her strength, humour, music, faith, and the warmth of her smile. Her presence filled every room she entered, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Friends and family will be notified once arrangements have been made.
