Grant Gerard Lamothe

In loving memory of Grant Gerard Lamothe.

Grant passed away peacefully on June 6, 2026, in Sechelt, BC, surrounded by family.

Grant was born in Detroit, Michigan, and his experiences growing up around the blues and Motown scene of the 1950s gave him a lifelong love of music. Always interested in the world around him, he studied engineering at the University of Detroit and worked as a technical artist making NASA components during the Space Race. He learned the blues harmonica while living in New Orleans and from then on was never without one in his pocket or glove compartment.

Grant moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s and lived in California for the next 20 years, loving the sunshine. He began a new career as a dentist and completed dental school in San Francisco before starting his own practice in Santa Barbara. Following a first marriage, he had a son born in 1978. In 1981 he married Debbie and they had three daughters together. The family moved to Langley, BC, and Grant became a proud Canadian citizen. An artist at heart, he left dentistry to work as a technical writer and illustrator.

Warm, outgoing, and generous, Grant made friends wherever he went. He would always strike up a conversation with a stranger and was a great listener and ebullient storyteller. He sang and played bass, harmonica, and guitar in many groups over the years, and he loved nothing more than gathering friends to play at summer music parties at his home. Another great interest was track and field. He competed in decathlons until his 70s and his travel plans were often arranged around Masters track championships across the world. 

In 2006 he met his last love Deb Reilly and they married in 2008. They would go on many adventures together, including Australia, Brazil, the UK, Italy, Spain, and Croatia. Grant and Deb lived in Fort Langley before retiring to Davis Bay near Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast. Grant loved his home here and became a well-known member of the music community. Deb cared for him in his final years as he began to suffer with dementia and died after a short illness with cancer at age 83. His family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Silverstone Care Centre, Sechelt Hospital, the staff and volunteers at Sunshine Coast Hospice, and Dr Alshorbagy for all of their care and support. 

Grant was one of a kind, and a truly special and loving father, husband, grandpa, and friend. Life is smaller without him. Grant leaves behind his wife Deb, his daughters Jessica, Alyson, and Sarina, stepchildren Ryan and Mike, grandchildren Anna, Lewis, Romy, Henry, Joshua and Ella, and many friends. He is predeceased by his parents Robert and Katherine, his brother Craig, and his son Christopher.

A memorial for Grant will be held on July 8, 2026 at 11.30am at Devlin Funeral Home in Gibsons, BC. If you would like to make a donation in Grant’s name, please consider giving to the Sunshine Coast Hospice or the Sunshine Coast Food Bank.
