Gretchen Bozak Obituary

After many visits from her friends and family of choice, Gretchen Bozak, of Gibsons, BC passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, in Sechelt, BC. She was 76. Her early years were spent in Eastern Ontario, and she graduated from Carleton University with a degree in journalism. Gretchen was curious, adventurous, and her journalistic tendencies served her well in life. After working in private and public sectors in Ontario, she relocated to Greater Vancouver and then in retirement to Gibsons, where she was determined to live and die with a magnificent view of sea and mountains.

Gretchen was a dedicated career federal civil servant who was proud to serve Canadians and the Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector while working with Agriculture Canada and Global Affairs. She spent many years working in China and Singapore, and while serving in Canada and abroad, she won the respect of those she encountered with her candour, honesty and warmth. In her retirement years she valued time spent with her former colleagues and friends at home and around the world.

A true Canadian, Gretchen crisscrossed the country innumerable times in work and retirement, never ceasing to be amazed by the wonders she saw in every province. Most important were her family and friends to whom she remained loving and loyal throughout her life.

Gretchen’s lifelong fascination with politics and world affairs was a hallmark of her spirited personality and the source of many lively discussions and debates. Further interests revolved around gardening with a particular passion for roses, shopping, swimming, watching films, reading mystery books, and travelling the world extensively. She did not waste time around her bucket list. There was always an adventure on the horizon with or without her partner in crime, her beloved dog, Moka.

Gretchen will be truly missed by her family in Ontario and the U.S. and her many friends worldwide. She had a very loving and special relationship with her niece Nikki Beckstead who predeceased Gretchen in 2023.

At Gretchen’s request, no memorial service will be held. Should anyone desire, donations may be made to St. Barts No Barrier Food Bank in Gibsons. They receive no government funding for their operations, so donations make this work possible. Donations can be sent by e-transfer to foodbank@stbarts-gibsons.com or call 604-886-7410 ext 103.
