Gunther Hans Ohrt passed away peacefully in Sechelt with his wife, Denise Poirier, by his side on November 29, 2025. Gunther, better known as Hans (Hansy, Gu, Johnny, Schnitzy, Grandpa Hans) was born in Frankfurt Germany on July 3, 1935 and is survived by his sister Gisela Marxen and her children Kris (Arnd) and Aeneas (Tanja). Hans lived a full and adventurous life, working as an engineer in the Netherlands and France before building a long career with KLM Airlines in New York. That love of travel eventually led him to his wife, Denise Poirier, and her children, Deborah (Blair & Maddy), Wendy (Mike) and Jeff. It is with great sadness that we lost Hans, but that sorrow is tempered by the fact that he lived such a full and wonderful life. Hans, with his subtle and sharp wit, was a treasure find for our family. We will always be filled with gratitude that he and mom found each other—her big escort on their travels around the world. A true gentleman whose deep love for his wife was clear to everyone. Hans will be dearly missed by his family and friends around the globe. As per Hans’ request, there will be no formal funeral or memorial but an opportunity for one final adventure with his ashes to be scattered over water.
