Hans Braun Obituary

Peter Hans Braun passed away peacefully on July 19, 2022, at the age of 87.  He was born on June 1, 1935, in Achern/Baden, Germany.  He is survived by his four children:  Martin, Susan, Ralph and Thomas; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his three siblings: Anne, Inge, and Uwe.

Peter worked at Siemens and Sudwestfunk Radio and Television as a technician before immigrating to Canada in 1957.  In 1958 he married Karin Erika Podeszwik in Montreal.  He was hired and trained further by IBM as a computer technician.  He distinguished himself by earning a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta in 1972 while working full-time for IBM and was subsequently promoted by IBM to the position of Research Scientist.  After working for IBM in Toronto and Brussels, Belgium, for several years he then worked at York University and from 1977 at UBC as an Associate Professor of Education until 1982.  Peter then founded Pacific Learning Institute where he authored computer education course materials and trained high school and college instructors how to teach computer studies.

While he became separated from Karin after 25 years of marriage, both he and Karin remained in contact throughout the rest of their lives, and he was deeply saddened by Karin’s recent passing in May 2022.  He was proud of his children’s academic accomplishments.  They all graduated from university, with three completing graduate degrees in law, medicine, and business.  Whenever any of his friends or family needed help, he was always eager to lend a hand.  He was a devoted grandfather, especially to Erin, his first grandchild.

Peter liked camping, hiking, downhill skiing and working with his hands.  If there was ever something that needed repair, he would invariably fix it himself.  He built his first house in Brockville, Ontario with his own hands and was always renovating or making home improvements to everyone of his subsequent homes.  In 2015 he moved to Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast where he enjoyed gardening and tinkering in his garage.
