Jim was born in St Pauls Hospital in Vancouver, the son of WW1 vet Norman M. MacNeil (born in Scotland) and Joyce Macneil (nee Finley -born in England) Both parents and his older brother Jack and his older sister Joan all pre-deceased him.
Jim grew up on the family house (shown on the Canada stamp 50cent in 1938) at 125 31st street in West Vancouver. As a young boy Jim’s playground was the beach between 31st and 29th streets
At various stages of his life Jim enjoyed stamp collecting, maps, long swims in the ocean, photography (and later photo digitization), hiking and mountain climbing (including both the Lions and Crown mountains), music, reading, tennis, badminton, skiing, travelling, house and landscape design, gardening, and stock market investing.
His education included Pauline Johnson elementary, Inglewood junior high, West Vancouver high (1958), Electrical Engineering (BASC - UBC -1964), MBA - Western University -1969.
Jim met his wife Veronica O’Connor in Ottawa when they were both working for the Federal Government. They married in 1967 and have been together ever since. They have 3 children (Anna, Geordie and Leah), and 3 grandchildren (London, Georgia, and Emma)
