Jane Halward (born Mary Sharon Jane Fuller), died peacefully at Sechelt Hospital, of sepsis, on March 7, 2025, at 9:38 p.m. surrounded by loving family. She was born into a devout Irish-Canadian Catholic family in Saint John, New Brunswick, March 26, 1946, and grew up in Saint John, N.B., Moncton, N.B., and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Her parents, Gregory Fuller and Elizabeth (Betty) Fuller (née Hanlon), pre-deceased her, as did her eldest sister, Margie, Margie’s husband Noel, niece Kelly, and grand-nephew Jamie.
She is survived by her much-loved husband, Don, two adored daughters, Keely (Mike) and Nadia (Frankie), and her equally-adored grandchildren, Jack, Evie, Charlotte and Effie. She is also survived by her remaining sister Marilyn, nieces Jennifer and Jane and their families, and especially niece Natalie Butler (Rob), who moved out west and became like a third daughter to Don and Jane.
Jane trained to be a registered nurse at Halifax Infirmary in Nova Svotia, and over the next many years, worked in Ontario at McMaster University Hospital (Hamilton), Chatham General Hospital (Chatham), Oshawa General Hospital (Oshawa), and in British Columbia at Royal Jubilee and Gorge Road Hospitals (Victoria), Port Hardy Hospital (Port Hardy), and UBC Hospital (Vancouver). During the last nine years of her career, she managed and taught in the Lab of the B.C.I.T. School of Nursing. In her retirement she volunteered at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner. She was an astute, caring, and knowledgeable nurse, loved by all who knew her.
Someone once said that Jane was the glue that held things together. That was true of her in both her professional and her private lives: Her unwavering love for others, her gentle sense of humour, her understated brilliance and emerging talent as an artist, drew people to her, and kept her dear in their hearts. Throughout her struggle with dementia, she remained cheerful and loving. She will be deeply missed, and never forgotten.
Family is deeply grateful to staff at Sechelt Hospital for their thoughtful and loving care. A special thank you to Martina of Nurse Next Door for being a loving companion to Jane and friend to the family.
A celebration of life will be announced at a future date.
