Jeanne Melby Obituary

Jeanne Pearl Melby, a remarkable woman who embodied resilience and warmth, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025, in Sechelt, British Columbia, at the age of 78. Born on October 3, 1946, in Glendon, Alberta, Jeanne was a trailblazer in her early career at Sun Oil (later Suncor)during the Great Canadian Oil Sands Project. She broke barriers in the workplace, rising to the top of the secretarial pool and setting her sights on upper management before a life-altering aneurysm changed her path.

Despite the challenges she faced, Jeanne’s determination shone through. She courageously relearned to speak, walk, write, and drive, a testament to her tenacity and spirit. Although she retired from her professional career, she dedicated her life to supporting her beloved husband, Sturla, and nurturing the relationships she cherished with family and friends.

Jeanne was known for her kindness and love, though she sometimes wore her frustrations openly—an understandable facet given her journey. Yet, she was always the real deal, softening with time and remaining a pillar of strength, persistence, and authenticity.

Jeanne was predeceased by her husband, Kristian Sturla Stendal Melby; her parents, Karl and Sennie Sorochan; and her siblings, John, Mike, Nick, Anne, and Thomas Sorochan. She is survived by her step-son, Eric Kristian Stendal, step-daughter, Kristine Ingrid Marie Melby, and grandchild, Kristian Stendal Melby. Her sisters, Lillian Clark, Elsie Witwicky, and Rosemary Navrot, and brother Peter Sorochan also survive her.

In her later years, especially after Sturla’s passing, Jeanne was blessed with the unwavering support of close family friends. Eric and Kristine extend their heartfelt gratitude to Roger & Linda Charest, Louise Lenko, Terry & Jane Nichol, Ashley Measor, and Nicholas Tattersall. Their compassion and care provided immense comfort and support that meant the world to Jeanne and her family.

Jeanne leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and the strength to face life’s challenges with grace. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Honouring Jeanne’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Her family will gather privately to scatter her ashes alongside Sturla’s, in the serene beauty of Sechelt where they shared many happy years.
