In Loving Memory of Joy Ellert
Joy Ellert passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026, in Sechelt, Britsh Columbia, at the age of 73, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on July 6, 1952, in Calgary, Alberta, Joy spent her early years in Calgary, where she met the love of her life, Grant Ellert. The two were married for 47 wonderful years and built a life filled with adventure, laughter, and cherished memories. After marrying in 1979, Joy and Grant, along with their son Jason, began a new chapter in Edmonton, Alberta. Their family was completed in 1980 with the arrival of their daughter, Jolene. In 1998, Joy and Grant followed their dream of coastal living and moved to Madeira Park on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast.
There, they embraced the lifestyle they loved, spending countless hours boating, fishing, and enjoying the beauty of the ocean. During her years on the Sunshine Coast, Joy became a valued member of the Oak Tree Market family, where she worked alongside her beloved “boys,” Richard and Dave, for many years. Through her work, she formed lasting friendships and became a familiar and cherished face within the community. Joy had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued, and she took a genuine interest in everyone she met. Joy approached everything she did with passion and care. Whether she was cooking a meal, fishing on the water, helping a friend, or spending time with her family, she gave her whole heart.
She was known for her kindness, generosity, strength, and unwavering willingness to help others. Her greatest joy in life was her family, whom she loved deeply and unconditonally. Joy leaves behind her devoted husband, Grant Ellert; her children, Jason Ellert (Christina) and Jolene Edwards (Chris); and her treasured grandchildren, Gavin Edwards, Amelia Edwards, and Julia Ellert. She is also survived by her sister, Joanne Nickiford (Lloyd) and her nieces, Amey Workun (Chad), Della Nania, Shara Masiuk (Gordon), and Norra Mirosevic (Del). Joy was predeceased by her parents, Philip and Verda Nickiford; her sisters, Jean Stauffer and June Bradford; and her nephew, Philip Nickiford. Joy’s warmth, compassion, and love touched the lives of many. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and will be announced to family and friends.
