Katherine Hicks Obituary

Katie Hicks (nee Meldrum)

December 12, 1982 - April 24, 2023

Born at the Sechelt Hospital to Ted and Janet Meldrum, Katie was a fuzzy haired blue-eyed baby that captured hearts from the start. She grew into a thriving girl and then a big sister in her first three years.  Growing up in Gibsons, she attended Gibsons Elementary and then Graduated from Elphinstone secondary in 2000. Always a popular kid, her childhood friends and family would describe her as having an almost gravitational pull that brought you in.

Her kindhearted nature, sense of humour and caring spirit were always something people just wanted to be around as much as they could.

This force continued on to her time spent on the lower mainland. Creating new friendships and bonds that felt like they were born a lifetime ago. This is where she was blessed with the first true love of her life, Jace. Jace was born in 2008 and spent the first few years of his life surrounded by a community of love, eventually moving to a condo Katie purchased in Maple Ridge.

True love found her once again in 2011, when Chris came into her life. They both knew from the start and in a few short months of dating, Katie and Jace made the move to Halfmoon Bay. Chris not only fell in love with Katie, but Jace as well and the Hicks family was established. In 2013, Katie’s father fell ill and Chris’ heart and capacity as a father shined as he wholeheartedly supported the Meldrum girls, Jace and was an integral part of Meldrum Clan, gaining both a second mother and sister in the process. Without his unwavering support during this time, Katie, Janet and Christy would have been lost as well. On June 8, 2013, Katie and Chris wed on the beach in Halfmoon bay with their loved ones by their side.

They went on to have two more sons, Cole in 2014 and Hunter in 2015. Their boys would bring so much into their lives and added a light to Katie’s soul that seemed impossible to be any brighter.  Watching their sons grow, learn new things and develop their own personalities was the best part of their lives. They took many vacations, travelling to Mexico, Cuba, Hawaii all through the USA and even as far as Europe in the Fall of 2022.  Travelling was a love they all shared, and wherever they went, as long as they were together, it was home.

When Katie fell ill in 2021, she was a fighter. She fought for every ounce of medical care she could have. She never gave up, and even when she was given a reason for her pain, she knew it wasn’t the cause and fought until the true culprit was brought to light. That push, lead to a diagnosis and then a treatment plan and her initial insistence to investigate further gave her another year to live and love.

As the sun was beginning to make it’s assent into the morning sky, with her loving Husband and Mother by her side, Katie was taken from us and the world lost its light on April 24th.

Katie joins loved ones that Predeceased her: her Father in 2013, and grandmother in 2015. Surviving her and carrying her love on this plain are her soulmate Chris, Her three boys Jace, Cole and Hunter, Mother Janet, sister Christy (Dan), nieces Evelyn, Robyn, Kaylah, Camille, nephew Jacob, her in-laws Jeff and Veronica, sister-in-law Lisa and the countless friends and loved ones she gathered along her way. She was so grateful for all the people that stepped up during this battle and will continue to support her family and shower them with love and light as they navigate this world without their rock.

A celebration of Life will be held at the Sechelt Botanical Garden on May 12th in the Pavillion from 1-3 pm. Please bring your memories and love and we’ll honor Katie as the community she always held so dear.
