Margaret "Maggie" Thompson Obituary

Pre-deceased by her mother Turine, father Vincent “Duffy” Currie, sister Agnes, brother-in-law Ralph Nobel. Her adoptive parents Helen and Winston Blaney, brother Michael, sisters-in-law Shirley Blaney and Gail Blaney. Husbands Pres Thompson and George Williams.

Survived by her eldest sister Ella Noble, brothers Jim (Pauline) Bramhill and Gerry (Gloria) Bramhill, Jack Blaney and David Blaney, and sister-in-law Sharon Blaney. Numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Her daughter Kimala, son Guy Thompson (Michelle and Torin, Kaylin Horne and Shailey Allen)

What a life of adventure and unconventional experiences packed into nearly 89 years, across western North America, from Medicine Hat, southern California, up to Alaska, years on Agamemnon Channel, and finally to Sechelt, plus countless places along the way, including Richmond and Squamish. Maggie acquired so many skills in her travels, things that helped her, 23 working dogs and the herd of horses survive being stranded, alone, on an Aleutian Island for 2 months. Being an avid, life-long fisherwoman was key to staying fed, and she spent endless hours over the years, catching fish in lakes, streams, rivers and the ocean, as long as it was wet. Her cooking skills were practiced in a variety of environments, at Diamond Head Chalet, cafes, ranch kitchens, fishing and wilderness camps and for her most appreciative family.

Critters were near and dear to Maggie’s heart, starting with her cat, Tom and ending with her cat, Missy (AKA Spawn of Satan, IYKYK), with a plethora of dogs like Trixie and Amber, horses, sheep, cattle and a one legged, house trained chicken, Susie. She nursed and cared for animals all her life and took advantage of learning from Doc Ickes, at the High Horse Arena in Idaho.

Her healing skills were a major help in the recovery from catastrophic injuries for both her husbands. As well, end of life care for both George’s father and uncle, and all kinds of tending for family and friends. The study with shamans and indigenous healers during her travels was paramount to the success in her self healing journey after a masectomy in 2001 and awaiting the arrival of Torin.

Maggie provided safe refuge for several young people, over the years, and her door was always open. She had fun as a Ranger leader and track and field coach, encouraging

both teams playing High School girls basketball and supporting all sorts of local sporting activities. She knew what a difference it could make, and was a constant spectator and cheerleader at Guy’s games.

Many thanks to the Doctors, nurses, care aides, cleaning, laundry, kitchen and admin staffs at Shorncliffe, Totem Lodge and Silverstone for their remarkable care over the years, especially her Dr J. All the help and kindness from the Home Care staff that kept her comfy at home for as long as was possible, was truly amazing. And all the visits from the residents of the Ponderosa making her feel still in touch with the world.

Flower offering at Davis Bay, 19 April around 6 pm when the tide starts to ebb. Details to follow. Ashes to be scattered at a later date, perhaps after May long weekend.

To remember Maggie, do what you can, when you can, with what you have. The SPCA, Yew House and our local food banks were especially important to her.
