Marie Connor Obituary

Marie passed away at home as she planned with her family by her side. Marie was predeceased by her Husband Terry and her seven siblings, Edith, Elsie, Edna, Bill, Lorna, Dayle and Donna Gladys. She is survived by her daughter Eileen and son Richard, along with Eileen’s husband Kevin and her two Grandchildren Connor and Haley. Marie also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.

Marie was many things to many people during her lifetime. Nurse, Volunteer, Mother, Adventurer, and Fierce Competitor to the end. Born in Lamonte, Alberta August 13, 1934, she was the fifth child of eight children growing up. Life during the depression was not easy for the family, but this instilled in Marie a determination to strive for a better life. She put herself through high school and with the help of her brothers on to nursing school where she graduated from the Royal Alec in Edmonton. With Nursing, this led to travel – she met Terry in Gibsons, and they immigrated to Australia and got married in 1964. Then onto New Zealand to welcome a baby girl Eileen in 1965, then back to Canada to plant roots, build family home with Richard joining the family in 1967. Marie worked as a nurse with several organizations over her career – Gibsons Public Health, Blue Nurses in Australia, Sechelt Hospital (St. Mary’s) and she was a pioneer of the Home Care Support that assisted her in her final days at home, where she was able to pass away as she wished. She was very active in the community, United Church, Legion, Hospital Auxiliary, Curling Club and Kiwanis Care Home to name a few of the major ones. She also was able to travel extensively in Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand to name a few. In her retirement years she picked up bridge and loved to play strategy games with her family, where if you won it was a hard-earned victory but many times a crushing defeat.

The family would like to thank Marie’s Doctor Dr. B Li Pak Tong in her care and to the palliative nurses Joanna and Suzanne who helped in her final day. We would also like to thank Mary who came in to clean the house and treat mom with kindness and compassion. We would also like to thank our special neighbours who were there to support the family during this time. At this time, we will be planning a celebration of life in August of 2024, details will be provided later. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Sechelt Hospital Auxiliary.
