It is with sadness that the family of Mercedes Link announce her passing on May 5, 2024 after an acute illness. Born in Rossland, British Columbia Mercedes was the first child of Walter and Fernande Schwartzenhauer and was baptized Marie Mercedes Joyce. Mercedes grew up in Rossland and Castlegar and spent many summers with her grandparents and extended family at Deer Park on the Arrow Lake. She often shared fond memories of this special place. She graduated from Stanley Humphries High School in 1954. As a young woman, she went to work at the courthouse in Nelson, B.C. where she met her husband, Alexander Link who was a member of the RCMP. Mercedes and Al married on October 5, l957 in Castlegar.
Together they raised a family of five children at various postings across British Columbia, beginning in Kimberley and followed by transfers to Fort St. John, Clinton, Smithers, and Chilliwack. In 1992 they retired to Gibsons, B.C. where Mercedes pursued her many interests, including a passion for quilting. She joined the Sunshine Coast Quilters’ Guild and served as president. She enjoyed travel immensely and made different trips abroad to England, Germany, Australia, Hawaii, Hungary, and Italy. She entertained her family over many summers on the Sunshine Coast and her children and grandchildren have wonderful memories of their time spent with her on the coast.
Predeceased by her husband Al (2014), Mercedes is forever in our hearts. She is survived by her siblings Lorraine (Gerry), George (Pat), Donald (Lisa), Germaine (Vic), her five children Catherine (Sidney), Christopher (Carolyn), Alexander (Monique), Michael (Courtney), Paul (Hamdee), her eight grandchildren, Courtney (Matt), Nathan, Taylor, Cydney, Clare, Sasha, Carmen, Evan and her two great grandchildren Luca and Mila. An evening prayer vigil will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 7:00 pm, Friday, May 17, 2024. The funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gibsons on Saturday May 18, 2024 at 1:30 pm. Reception to follow at Cedars Inn in Gibsons from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
