Myrtle Belle (Rundberg) Wood

MYRTLE BELLE WOOD – September 6, 1935 – JUNE 16, 2026

Myrtle graced our world with an abundance of love, laughter, and open heartedness. After a life full of adventure, she died June 16th, 2026, at Sechelt Hospital. She was predeceased by her Norwegian parents, Johan and Nellie Rundberg, and her four siblings: Jack, Ruth, Sonja and Greta.

Myrtle was a strong and independent woman of many talents. She raced stock cars in her younger days. She was an expert seamstress, able gardener, flower arranger, painter and ardent crafter. Her appreciation of her Norwegian heritage was evident in her creations.

She had a beautiful alto voice and taught her daughters to sing in harmony with her. This uplifted them all in tough times and enhanced their joy in good times.

In 1969 Myrtle moved to a home in Port Mellon and quickly became a fixture there. She knew her neighbours and looked out for them. She took an administrative job at the mill, where she met many wonderful people, finally retiring as Training Coordinator Assistant. She thrived in the job, as it allowed her to express her love for people and tapped into her creative side.

The ocean was her happy place. She swam at Port Mellon Beach (unofficially named Myrtle’s Beach) from May to October, floating, cloud-watching, savouring each moment.

In retirement she remained a steadfast supporter of her local community. For many years she served as treasurer of the Port Mellon Community Association (PMCA). She and other volunteers in the PMCA organized beach parties and crafting lessons for the local kids, trampolining, hot dogs and marshmallows around the firepit and no end of summer fun. Myrtle relished all of it.

The family owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Annette McCall, and to all the caring hospitalists, nurses, care aides and staff at Sechelt Hospital. Their kindness, compassion and care made Myrtle’s difficult last days bearable.

Myrtle is survived by her children, Cheryl Monroe (Jim) and Marilyn Crumpton (Rick), her grandchildren, David, Michael, Rob, and Aaron, and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 805 North Road, Gibsons, on July 4th at 1 pm. All who knew Myrtle are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations to Sechelt Hospital would be appreciated.
