Nikolaos (Nick) Kiriakakis, 83, of Sechelt, passed away peacefully at Sechelt Hospital on February 5, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. During his brief battle with heart cancer, Nick faced his illness with quiet strength and remarkable bravery. He was a devoted father and grandfather, a cherished brother, a beloved family member, and a loyal friend. His presence will be profoundly missed.
Nick was born on December 30, 1942 in Alexandroupolis, Greece to George and Evgenia Kiriakakis. He was the youngest of four children. He married his true love, Evanthia (née Thanos) on August 20, 1961 in Dikella, Greece, shortly after finishing high school. He then completed his compulsory military service during which he was trained and served as an army mechanic — an experience that sparked his lifelong passion for cars and driving.
In 1967, Nick immigrated to Canada in search of new opportunities. Evanthia joined him in 1968 with their children, George and Evgenia. The family settled in Kitimat, British Columbia, where they built a loving home and welcomed their third child, Irene.
Nick worked at Alcan in Kitimat, B.C. until his retirement. He worked tirelessly to provide for his family, always placing their needs above his own. After retiring, Nick and Evanthia moved to the Sunshine Coast, settling in Sechelt, where he lived until his passing.
Nick will be remembered as a man of integrity who led by example. His calm presence, gentle spirit, and non-judgmental nature left a lasting impression on all who knew him. His empathy and deep respect for others reflected the values by which he lived. He continues to inspire his children with the lessons he had quietly taught and with the way he lived his life.
Family was the center of Nick’s world. He guided his children with humility, compassion, and unwavering devotion. Nothing brought him greater joy than watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow into kind and thoughtful individuals.
Nick appreciated life's simple pleasures. An exceptional driver, he loved taking his family on road trips and outings. In Kitimat, he embraced the rugged beauty of the region. Nick and Evanthia created a warm and welcoming home filled with gatherings, celebrations, and generous hospitality. In retirement, the couple enjoyed their life in Sechelt; They especially delighted in the time they spent fishing and sharing their abundant catches with family and friends. Later in life, Nick discovered a love of cooking and delighted in preparing meals alongside his daughter Irene, who proudly served as his sous-chef.
A devoted hockey enthusiast, Nick was a passionate, lifelong fan of the Vancouver Canucks and rarely missed a game. In retirement, he and Evanthia frequently traveled back to Alexandroupolis, reconnecting with family and friends. They embraced the culture and warmth of their homeland. These visits brought them immense happiness.
Nick’s life was also marked by profound loss. In 2021, the sudden passing of his eldest son, George, deeply saddened the family. In 2023, he lost his beloved wife, Evanthia, after 62 years of marriage. Throughout these hardships and his own health challenges, Nick’s faith sustained him. In his later years, he often expressed how grateful he felt to live with his youngest daughter Irene and her family.
He is survived by his loving daughters and their families: Evgenia (Murray) of Leduc, Alberta, and Irene (John) of Sechelt, British Columbia, as well as his sister, Domena Flouri of Richmond, British Columbia.
A proud grandfather and great-grandfather, Nick leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Kristy, Nikolaos, Adrianna, Delesha, Evanthia, Austin, Eleny, Anastasia, and Robert; and great-grandchildren: Arielle, Helena, Angelo, Jakson, and Jayda. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and a godson in both Canada and Greece. Nick was predeceased by his beloved son, George (February 2, 2021); his loving wife of 62 years, Evanthia (December 1, 2023); his sisters, Marina Klonarakis and Anastasia Zaferelis; and his parents, George and Evgenia Kiriakakis.
