An adventurer at heart and a deeply curious woman in life, Patricia carried a sparkle that lingered wherever she went. Her laughter, her love of the wind in her hair, and her open, generous spirit inspired many along her path. She will be deeply missed by family and friends everywhere.
Patricia Ann Power was born on January 8, 1947, in Toronto, the first child of Coral Kathleen Power and John Alyuishes Power. In time, their household grew with siblings Paul Power, Michael Power, John Power, and their youngest, Catherine Power.
Her deep appreciation for music, family, and new experiences drew her west to British Columbia. In 1972, she worked closely with Chief Dan George and the children of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, where she was fondly known as “Patti.” Later, she made her home in Lions Bay with her late spouse, Bruce Hewson, and together they welcomed their daughter, Kathleen Power Hewson, in 1981.
In later years, Patricia made her home in Sechelt, a place she loved deeply and where she found a rich and caring community. The friendships, kindness, and sense of belonging she experienced there meant the world to her. Sechelt became not only her home, but her chosen resting place.
Patricia walked through life with warmth and wisdom, connecting easily with people from all walks of life. She was many things: a sister, daughter, friend, aunt, wife, mother, stepmother, and grandmother. To those who knew her, she often evoked a sense of cherished togetherness—like gathering around a shared dinner table, where conversation and laughter flowed freely.
That she left this world on New Year’s Eve feels fitting for the joy and sparkle she carried. Fireworks sounded in the distance shortly after her final breaths—a quiet celebration of her freedom. Even in the most difficult moments, she reminded those closest to her that acceptance and celebration can coexist.
The following morning brought signs that felt like her voice carried forward: an eagle overhead, the sound of bagpipes drifting through the New Year’s mist. These moments served as reminders to live fully, to greet each dawn with openness, and to trust that joy and newness are always present.
Patricia found connection everywhere she went. Even during times of isolation, people were drawn to her depth and presence. What she wanted most for those she loved was freedom—freedom of body, freedom of spirit, and the ability to choose adventure at a moment’s notice. Her suffering has ended.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the many medical professionals and community supports who walked alongside Patricia with care, compassion, and dignity throughout her journey. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
May we honor her by seeing the world, learning from its cultures, and standing in awe of its oceans. May we not remain stuck or afraid. Motion was where she thrived, and may you find your own motion—without fear—in every adventure you seek.
Mama, thank you for showing me how to live with courage, curiosity, and love. When I feel the wind in my hair or hear the ocean call, I will know you are near. I will keep moving, keep choosing wonder, and keep your spirit alive in every adventure I take.
