Phyllis May (Willey) Hoops

HOOPS, Phyllis May

Sept 13, 1930 – Jan 5, 2023

On January 5, 2023 Phyllis Hoops passed away peacefully with her family by her side.  She will be remembered with love by her children Stephen and Colleen (Neil), grandchildren Russell (Mackenzie) and Maryse (Gavin), great grandson Theo, sister Dorothy (John), brother Ralph and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was born in Vancouver and attended Florence Nightingale Elementary School and King Edward High School.  She had a strong character and work ethic, starting work at age 13 at Woolworths and continuing her education at Normal School to become a teacher.

Phyllis and Don were married July 16, 1955 (“and that was fine” according to Phyllis!).  They immediately moved to Gibsons where she proudly taught grades 2 and 3 at Gibsons Elementary.  A few years later they built their dream home in Soames Point where they lived for 62 years.  Phyllis loved decorating their home for the season and entertaining their wonderful circle of friends.  Her children have a fond memory of coming home to the smell of freshly baked bread.

Phyllis enjoyed bowling, playing duplicate bridge, square dancing and playing badminton (ask the grandchildren about her completely missing the birdie then toppling over like a tree in the back yard!).  Phyllis and Don were best friends and did everything together (including watching sports on TV!).  After Don retired, they travelled all year long - with the family at a campsite on Skaha Lake, Mazatlan in the winter in their motorhome and countless cruises all over the world.

Phyllis asked us to extend a special thank you to Dr. Spithoff, Christensen Village and the Sechelt Hospital.

We will miss Phyllis and think of her with love in our hearts always.
